Westward of Ascoli the Picene environment gets wilder and less inhabited.

At at about 20 kilometres from the town the visitor is already at the feet of the imposing calcareous rampart of the Sibillini Mountains .

Among the most famous places to visit: the Monte Sibilla ( Sibyl Mountain ) and Lago di Pilato (Pilate's Lake ).

The Sibillini Mountains are inside the wider area called Parco Nazionale (National Park) with the same name where it is possible to have trips, trekking, climbing on rocky faces.

Going up Arquata del Tronto and following the road signs to Norcia the visitor can reach the tableland of Castelluccio di Norcia (known for the lentils) called Piano Grande (Big Plain) already belonging to the region of Umbria .

In the plain the seat the School of Paragliding and Hang-gliding is attended by many fans from all over Europe .
